AWFA must be recertified every 3 years. ACC-Ottawa is sponsoring a recertification weekend open to all who have their AWFA certification and need to recertify. The course is two days and will run from 8:00am – 4:00pm at St. Pius X High School, 1481 Fisher Avenue. If you are an active trip leader the Section will cover the complete cost of your recertification (an active trip leader has led a trip in the past year or has one planned by the end of this coming summer). If you have your AWFA but are not a leader and are an active (participating) Section member you will receive a 50% subsidy. (Your cost will be $90.) AWFA is recommended, although not mandatory, for trip leaders. Keep yours current!

Via Ferrata – Protected Climbing Paths in the Italian Dolomites
by Andrew Lavigne
A Via Ferrata (lit- “Iron Way”) is a fixed-protection climbing path. First built during the first world war to enable warring troops to scale technical terrain in the mountains of Italy and Austria, these protected climbing routes are now a popular sub-genre of climbing. Many new recreation-only sport routes have been created in addition to the now-historial WWI ferrata routes. If you’ve ever wanted to experience the feeling of being on a big-wall route without a big commitment, then this activity might be for you!
